This is the story of Joe Valachi (Charles Bronson) who in 1963, before a United States Investigating Committee and a vast television audience, had laid bare operations in America.

Valachi, serving his third prison term, spoke from experience. For thirty-three years he had been a member of Cosa Nostra. As driver and "hit man", he had witnessed the power struggles of Mafia strong men, including Lucky Luciano and Vito Genovese; the uneasy truces between Mafia families and the lightning assassinations. He married the daughter of an assassinated boss. He was present at the famous conclave in Apalachin, New York, where mobsters and bodyguards from all over the United States had gathered at Genovese's invitation after the slaying of Albert Anastasia.

Fearing for his life after Genovese, operating a national Mafia network from his Atlanta, Georgia prison cell, had given him the "kiss of death", Valachi decided to inform. The price on Valachi's life rose from $20,000 to $100,000 after his television appearance.
