Epic in scale and full of action adventure, suspense and romance, the Hornblower series based on C.S. Forester's classic maritime adventures - the story of one young man's struggle to become a leader of men, Set against the back drop[ of the 18th century Anglo-French was bloodiest time in British naval history, the films trace Hornblower as he grows from a stuttering, insecure, sea sick recruit to become the most gallant and redoubtable figure in naval history.

The Duchess and The Devil

Horatio Hornblower, now promoted to Acting Lieutchant, captures the French ship Le Reve off the Spanish coast. The Captain of the French ship is furious that such a youngster has pulled off such a coup.

But far more daunting is Hornblower's first taste of the high life, when he is invited to nine with the Governor of Gibraltar and his wife. The prospect of this is frightening enough, but an unexpected guest, the glamorous Duchess of Wharfedale, adds another spin to his evening.

The acquaintance doesn't end with dinner as Hornblower is asked to escort the Duchess to England, and to take a packet of important naval despatches with him. Trouble ensues on route as Hornblower is caught by Spanish Fleet who force him to surrender. Anxious to protect the despatches. Hornblower confides in the Duchess, but doubt arises in his mind as he hears her speaking in Spanish to their captors.

Hornblower, his crew, and the Duchess are taken to the Spanish mainland and thrown into jail. Howerver the Duchess is in better quarters and with significant influence over the prison governor. Has Hornblower given his precious despatches to an untrustworthy liar?

In an abortive escape bid by one of his crew, Hornblower finds himself accepting responsiblity as the highest ranking officer. He is locked in an infested hell hole which would break the will of lesser men.

On his release from solitude, Hornblower and the prison governor witness a Spanish ship in peril on stormy seas, Hornblower and his crew mount a daring rescue mission. The dangerous mission takes its toll when they are rescued by the Indefatigable.

Captain Pellew of the Indefatigable claims that the men do not have to return to prison, but Hornblower insists and all the men choose to follow their newly promoted officer.

Two weeks later the Spanish authorities order Hornblower's release, along with his men in acknowledement of their selfless action and bravery. Howerver the prison governor, Don Massaredo, fears this is not the last they have seen of Hornblower.
