It's 1935 and Victoria Grant - played magnificently by Julie Andrews - is stranded in Paris. Deserted by her runaway boss she is penniless, hungrey and eviction looms large on the horizon.

A series of bizarre events lead Victoria to team up with Toddy (Robert Preston). With Toddy as her mentor Victoria embarks upon a strange new career - a faemale impresonator with difference: a woman pretending to be a man impersonating a woman. Count Victor Grazinski is born and becomes the toast of Parisienne Nightlife.

However, King (James Garner) the owner of New York's most successful nightclub - is captivated, confused, fascinated and is determined to discover Victor/Victoria's secret.
