Eventually, in 1970 after 8,750 hours of police work, Manson and three others faced judgement. With the key prosecution witness locked in solitary confinement to protect her life and a jury supervised by bailiffs, a murder trial began, which would become the longest and most grotesque ever recorded in American legal history.

It was a crime that defied the imagination. On 18th November 1978, deep in the jungles of Guyana, the Reverend Jim Jones gathered nearly 1000 devoted followers of his People's Temple around him and from a wooden throne gave them the news that most of them were about to die. His idealist doctrine of 'revolutionary suicide' left them well prepared. With a simple promise that they would "meet again...", they formed an orderly queue and then voluntarily drank a lethal cocktail of Kool-Aid laced with valium and cyanide. Mothers even gave the lethal poison to their children. It was the greatest mass suicide of the 20th century the legacy of an evil megalomaniac whose power became mixed with a lethal dose of paranoia.
