Franklin Bean, Jnr (Charlie Sheen) is a loner and a non-conformist. His father is desperate to tame the rebellious boy and enlists him in the army in order to save him from jail. During a bar room brawl, Bean attacks an M.P. and then in violation of military protocol has his hands tattooed, only to find himself thrown into the Stockade, a U.S hell hole, where he is imprisoned with a motley crew of hard-core criminals.

Under the ruthless command of the emotionally disturbed sergeant Otis V. McKinney (Martin Sheen), Bean is subjected to cruel military reform. So he sets out to unite his fellow inmates, giving them pride and a purpose something that McKinney and his methods had failed to achieve.

The sergeant's mental stability begins to deteriorate and in an insane lesson of reform he kills one of the prisoners. Summoned as a witness at the trial of McKinney, Bean now faces the ultimate dilemma: either to side with his fellow inmates and condemn the sergeant to the firing squad,or face up to his responsibilities and tell the truth in order to spare the life of a visibly broken man...
