A shattering new film from the director of 'The Mission' and 'The Killing Fields'. Calcutta, India. A place of indescribable poverty where the desperate struggle for survival is hampered still further by the activities of the evil 'mafia' who ruthlessly prey on the local esidents.

Visiting the ironically named City of Joy is Max Lowe (PATRICK SWAYZE), an American doctor desperately searching for a reason to go on living. Attacked and robbed, he is cared for by nurse Joan Bethel (PAULINE COLLINS), who coerces him into helping out at the area's make-shift clinic. Immediately Max clashes with the local godfather and finds himself thrown headlong into a brutal confrontation that will have enormous repercussions on all their lives...
