On a dark and rain-drenched night a young pregnant woman is savagely slabbed to death. Her husband is arrested and convicted of the crime and faces lite in prison.

fifteen years later Ben Jordan (Bulger Hauer) is free, out on parole and living some place where his lace and his grisly _ secret are known to no one except his social worker, Laura Mathews (Natasha Richardson).

Against the odds the two of them become lovers and inspired by passion Laura campaigns to prove the convicted killer's innocence.
